Adventure

If you take the time to flip through the pages of the Bible, you will find very few polite little meetings with God. In fact, you won’t find even one. Encounters with the Living God bring terrible danger and terrible comfort. Nothing is safe about edging closer to a Being who formed stars and snails with His bare hands. Reactions to a timeless and heroic God include awe, amazement, dread, confession, worship, loyalty, and love - but never boredom.

“Safe?... Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.” - CS Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Take the Adventure challenge:

  • When you think of your own encounter with God, would you say you have come to know Him as wild and powerful, or as predictable and safe? What prior experiences with God or with the organized church might be contributing to this reaction?
  • Have you ever told God you are ready to follow Him, regardless of the cost? What might keep you from making this kind of commitment?
  • What emotions rise to the surface when you consider following a God you cannot see on an adventure of which you do not know the outcome?
  • Take a look at the Gospel of Mark in the Bible. Begin with the first chapter. What do you notice about God’s character, as it is displayed in the person of Jesus? In what specific ways does God refuse to play it safe?
